Guanacos are majestic South American camelids, being among the largest mammals of this region. They occupy areas ranging from steppes to scrublands and mountainous regions stretching across Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina - with especially high numbers in Andean foothills of Argentina and Chile! Guanacos can live at extremely high altitudes.
The guanaco is an agile and speedy creature of Patagonian landscapes. Its slender stature, long neck, large brown eyes and pointed ears give it a unique look that stands out from its animal neighbors. Even more impressive is their speed; the guanaco can run up to 35 miles per hour!
From South America's unusual camelid family, the guanaco stands out with a unique look. Notably larger than vicuñas but significantly smaller than llamas, its brownish-tan back and white underparts also easily distinguish it from alpacas and llamas; while both of those have fur that can range in color, all wild guanacos feature this same coat patterning. Also noticeably different are their ears: where an alpaca has symmetrical pear shapes and a llama small curved ones, a guanaco’s are slenderly straight and pointed!

Patagonia boasts an impressive concentration of pumas, considered to be the highest in comparison with anywhere else around the world. Estimates range from 50-200 wildcats across a sprawling territory spanning over 227k hectares!

If you're dreaming of getting up close and personal with an elusive puma, Torres del Paine National Park is the perfect destination! With patience and a bit of luck in your favor. November - February is best for sightings as these majestic creatures are more active during this season and have the best chances of being spotted at safe distances. Remember to keep all encounters safe and be as quiet as possible!
The majestic puma is an icon of South American wildlands, and the Chilean government has taken significant steps to ensure their protection. Hunting these cats is strictly prohibited in Chile, even though they can be a source of conflict with local farms that raise sheep as livestock. Nevertheless, conservation efforts are underway throughout the country to protect them where hunting used to be common practice.
Pumas may look intimidating, but are generally not dangerous to humans. That said, incidents of attacks increase in places where human populations heavily outnumber puma habitats - the US being a prime example. On farms or other rural areas with livestock and pets, it's advisable to take extra caution as these animals can be vulnerable targets for hungry cats looking for an easy meal. Fortunately in Patagonia’s wilder lands such as national parks and nature reserves there is plenty of natural food available which has enabled them to live relatively harmoniously alongside humans without fatalities occurring!
